George Onuorah is a social change journalist, newsroom leader, and good governance advocate who believes journalism should do more than report events – it should strengthen democratic accountability, encourage active citizenship, and build public trust.
With more than 13,000 hours of broadcast experience, George has held senior editorial and leadership roles across multiple media organisations, serving as Deputy Head of Station, Head of Operations, and News Team Lead. He has led newsroom operations, shaped editorial strategy, overseen coverage of governance, elections, and other public-interest issues, and mentored more than 50 interns and early-career journalists, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in Nigeria’s media industry.
George believes journalism is most valuable when it leads to tangible public impact. His reporting on illegal taxation in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, contributed to government intervention and corrective action, reinforcing his conviction that journalism can influence public policy and strengthen democratic accountability.
Beyond the newsroom, George explores how storytelling and emerging technologies can deepen civic participation and public understanding. He co-created Zuby and the Ballot, an AI-assisted civic education film that simplifies Nigeria’s electoral laws and demonstrates how AI can be applied responsibly in public-interest communication. He also serves as Southeast Coordinator of the International Purpose Driven Youth Initiative (IPDYI), where he works with schools and communities to help young people discover purpose, develop leadership skills, and become active citizens. Through the initiative, he has supported more than 400 young people and reached over 25,000 students through civic education and leadership programmes.
As an ERAI Fellow, George is deepening his work on responsible AI in journalism, with a particular interest in AI governance, algorithmic accountability, content authenticity, and ethical newsroom practice. He is committed to helping African newsrooms adopt AI responsibly while preserving the accuracy, transparency, and public trust that are hallmarks of quality journalism.
