Joydeep Dasgupta is a Multimedia Journalist, Media and AI Educator with over two decades of experience spanning across Print, Television, Digital and emerging media ecosystems. Beginning his career in 2003 with Sahara TV as a Producer and Correspondent, he went on to hold key editorial and leadership positions, including serving as Station Head of Zee News in Kolkata. Over the years, he has developed a deep understanding of newsroom dynamics, storytelling and the evolving role of technology in journalism.
Currently, Joydeep serves as the Editor of News Sense, a digital-first initiative focused on Solutions Journalism and fact-checking. He has been an Accredited Defence Journalist since 2012, certified by the Ministry of Defence, Government of India.
He is also the Founder of Media Skills Lab, an educational and research institute dedicated to Media literacy, AI literacy, Data journalism, Fact Checking and Solutions Journalism.
He is a Master Trainer with ADiRA (AI for Digital Readiness and Advancement), one of India’s largest AI literacy networks, where he trains media professionals, healthcare practitioners, and students across the country on AI readiness and responsible AI adoption.
In 2024, Joydeep was appointed as a Mentor for the Asian American Journalists Association’s (AAJA) N3Con Mentorship Program, guiding aspiring journalists from South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.
Joydeep Dasgupta is also a Trainer associated with the Google News Initiative India Training Network and Asian American Journalist Association, specializing in identifying and debunking misinformation. As an Accredited Trainer with the Solutions Journalism Network, he promotes a solutions-based approach to journalism across the Asia-Pacific region.
A Thomson Reuters Foundation Fellow, Joydeep has focused his investigative reporting on climate transition, human trafficking, slavery, human rights, and gender reporting.
His contributions have been widely recognized, including:
– Changemaker of the Year (2021) by the Thomson Reuters Foundation for his work in Development Journalism and Media Literacy.
– Sishushree Award (2020) by the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights, supported by UNICEF, for Best Reporting on Child Rights (English).
– National Laadli Media and Advertising Award (2016), supported by UNFPA for the Best Feature Writing in the Web Category.
– Best Social Film Award (2014) for his animation film Tree, My Friend, focused on Climate Change, awarded by Yes Foundation.
– Best TV Journalist Award (2009) by Journalism Awards and Candid Communication.
Joydeep holds a first-class PG Diploma in Mass Communication and Journalism from Jadavpur University, a Certification in Journalism for Social Change from UC Berkeley, and an Executive MBA in Media Management and Marketing from the Said Business School, University of Oxford.
He is also actively involved in Documentary Filmmaking and Mentoring and Teaching Journalism.
